Dissecting the daily New York Times Op-Ed illustration

"Scientists Are Made, Not Born," 2/28/05

Last week I railed about an information graphic whose legibility was compromised by dressing a chart up as an old-fashioned ledger book. Sunday's graphic by mgmt. design makes no such attempt, using three three-column tables and a line graph (scroll down!) to demonstrate rising percentages of women among those receiving science degrees. The trends in this data are so clear and dramatic that little graphic elaboration is required. The designers confine themselves to using their collection of public-accomodation-style female figures to pictorialize, if not pretty, things up slightly. Does the job, but I wouldn't want to see this too often.
