Dissecting the daily New York Times Op-Ed illustration

"As Iraqis Celebrate, the Kurds Hesitate," 2/1/05

Beautiful work by Turkish illustrator and comic book artist M.K. Perker. The three characters are rendered so distinctively, you get the sense that they could actually be individuals and not the allegorical representations of Kurd, Sunni, and Shiite factions that I presume they're supposed to be. (Am I just ignorant here? Anyone know if, say, the guy on the right is Sistani or something?) The exact meaning of the drawing is a mystery to me, but then, so is the point of Galbraith's thoughtful but noncommittal op-ed. I never liked those half/empty/full glass metaphors, they often seem kind of weak, but maybe I'm just looking at this too late at night.
